The Ottawa team gets a special visit!

A customer drops in and gets us all pumped up

One of our PaintShop customers, Gene Salois, dropped by our Ottawa office on Monday and I can’t tell you how excited we were to meet one of our biggest fans. One of the things I loved most about being a Product Specialist out in the field was that I got to meet so many wonderful people.

There’s nothing as energizing and sometimes humbling than having a real and frank discussion with someone who uses our software. It’s more than just understanding what features they like or what they don’t. It’s really about understanding people and getting to know each other. Once you know someone, it’s a lot easier to understand and appreciate what they care about and what motivates them. Then it’s our turn to figure out what we can do to help them achieve their creative goals.

Now that I’m the Product Marketing Manager for PaintShop, I spend more time in the office. One thing I miss is the face to face interaction with fellow software junkies like me. I’ve been a PaintShop user since 1998 and there’s nothing quite as refreshing as being able to flop out on a couch and just geek out with a fellow PaintShop enthusiast. That’s why having Gene visit us was such a treat. I could’ve “talked shop” all day with Gene because his enthusiasm, his passion, his open mindedness and frankness reminded me why I love my job so much. It’s easy to get distracted in all the day to day stuff that goes into making a software product. It’s just as important to remember who you are making it for. Thanks Gene!

Check out some of the other reactions around here about getting some face time with a customer…

“After 20 years of meeting customers, it never gets old for me. My first conversation with Gene to arrange his visit to Ottawa was exciting and I eagerly awaited his arrival. As we chatted he shared the following perspective with me. “My life has been an amazing adventure. I’ve traveled the world and seen and met so many wonderful people. While I may earn my living in the somewhat dry landscape of high tech, the people I meet who inspire me and the events that shape my life continually drive me to capture in a creative way all that matters to me. That’s probably why most of my creative work revolves around my family. So, to summarize – my life requires (maybe even demands!) me to be creative – it is a drive, a passion, and a sense of self that brings peace, satisfaction, and an inspired outlook on life. I can’t imagine my life without “creativity”. He went on to share with all of us how Corel products enabled his creativity and it was inspiring, humbling and extremely motivating. It was a special day for many of us.”
Janet Banks, Director of Integrated Marketing

“I’ve been communicating with Gene since late 2010 through our Corel Your Way Online Research Panel, and I was so excited to finally meet him in person! I knew he was a fan of PaintShop and Painter, but talking to him face to face really brought to light his dedication to the products and the artistry he applies to the amazing projects he creates. I loved introducing him to my colleagues and watching how his enthusiasm infected them. His passion is contagious! I would love the opportunity to meet more of Corel’s customers.”
Jennifer Topping, Senior Market Analyst

“It was a pleasure to meet Gene and have him come to Ottawa to meet with members of the PaintShop team. He is an enthusiastic and creative person who has a true passion for our products and the tools they provide him to express himself artistically. Like me, Gene doesn’t consider himself a “pro” photographer, but he uses PaintShop to turn the snapshots of his precious family memories into works of art. With a 3-year old who never stops moving it can seem impossible to capture that “perfect shot”, but Gene inspired me to explore the ways I can take my own family photos to the next level. Let’s see what I come up with!
Alexis Hamilton-West, Communications Manager, Digital Media

And Gene was pretty excited himself! He said, “The hospitality and truly enthusiastic individuals I met were a great inspiration and really brought home the message that Corel does care.”

About Evelyn Watts

I’ve spent over 12 years in the software industry, with the last 6 years as a Product Specialist and Field Services Manager for Corel. This requires the ability to learn quickly, travel a lot, speak in front of hundreds of people and essentially be a software jockey and corporate ambassador. Recently I’ve become the Global Product Marketing Manager for a product I’ve loved for many years.
