The Corel World # 5: New Year’s Resolutions

Well, we’re almost a whole month into 2012 and if you’re anything like me, you’re sticking with those hard-to-keep New Year’s resolutions. I’ve been following a gruelling seven-day workout routine of high-impact yoga-pilates-jazzercise and living on a low-carb diet of celery water, seaweed and tofu chunks. It’s fantastic!

Oh who am I kidding? If anything I’ve become fatter, lazier and yes, even more unhealthy thanks to my continued love of Doritos, beer and sitting on my ass. But don’t judge me too harshly. I’m still recovering from 2011, which was a pretty damn busy year working here at Corel, if I do say so myself.

The only resolution I actually am bothering to stick with is my attempt to somehow get a little better at taking photos. I managed to snag a pretty sweet camera over the holidays. You can find some of my personal portrait photos below, which I would like to stress, have not been altered in anyway using PaintShop Pro.

Of course, while my New Year’s resolutions may have fallen by the wayside, Corel has a number of resolutions for 2012 that they are sticking with and which I’m pretty pumped about working on. So just what can you expect to see in the coming year? I give you…

Corel’s Top 3 New Year’s Resolutions (*as seen through the eyes of a sarcastic and incredibly out of shape copywriter)

1. More social media: Oh those crazy kids and their Facebooking and Twitter whatchamacallits. Over the past year Corel’s social media and PR departments have been cranking our online presence up to 11. The reason? It’s actually one of the best ways to stay in touch with our customers. Turns out Facebook and Twitter aren’t just websites for people to post photos of their cats or find out the fascinating details of what Snooki from Jersey Shore had for breakfast. Instead it’s a place where companies like Corel can interact with the people who actually use our products on a daily basis. 2012 is going to be even bigger for Corel’s social media and PR teams, which means more contest giveaways, more product-related content and more showing the creative things our customers actually do with our software. I’ll be pitching in from time to time, so follow us on Facebook and Twitter, already. You can play Farmville and read Snooki’s latest incredibly profound tweet about oatmeal when you’re done.

2. More events: In 2011 Corel managed to make it out to a number of events. From Ottawa Fashion Week, to our PR teams’ trip to BlissDom Canada, to the Speciality Printing & Imaging Technology Expo in New Orleans, to our more recent full-force blowout at the CES in Las Vegas . In 2012, we’re going to be hitting up even more events as a way to showcase what we do as well as get some face-to-face time with our customers. It’s nice to get out of our cubicles and get a little fresh air once in awhile, and I’m hoping to make it out to a couple of events myself this year. So if you see a Corel employee out in the wild, swing on by and chew the fat with us. There’s a good chance you’ll be entertained, enlightened and may even get some free swag out of it!

3. More posts from employees and customers: One of the cool things we’re doing in 2012 is continue to showcase our customers, who—if you didn’t know already—are some pretty awesome people. Just look at award-winning artists like Android Jones and Mike Thompson , both of whom are long-time Painter users. Of course, we’re always on the lookout for more insight from our customers, so whether you’re new to Corel products or a long-time customer, if you dig our stuff, drop us a line—we’d love to hear from you! Meanwhile, on the company side, you can expect to see more blog posts just like this one that offer a look at life inside Corel and show a little bit more about the creative, passionate and possibly slightly insane individuals who work here.

    Hi Adam,
    Good to hear that Corel plans to make more of an impact in the world of social media. Does that include plans for Google+? The appearance of the +Corel page on G+ was the cause of some interest and even excitement but it quickly turned to disappointment in the absence of any activity. I checked this morning and currently 99 people, myself included, have circled +Corel – it would be a lot more if you engaged with it even a little bit. And I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that those 99 won’t stick around for long unless they see a little bit of a commitment from Corel to its customers on G+.
    G+ has fast grown into one of the best places on the web for people to share and talk about photography, it would be a shame, both for Corel and users of products like PaintShop Pro X4 if it missed the boat because of a policy that focusses on Facebook and Twitter.

      Thanks very much for checking out our blog and for sharing your thoughts on Google+. You’re absolutely right about the need for us to put more focus on Google+. We’ve been focused on building up our community connections on Facebook and Twitter and our other online communities, but our team is working on a more detailed plan for Google+ so you should start to see more activity there over the coming weeks and months.

      I’ll be sure to fast track your feedback to our PaintShop Pro and AfterShot teams as a starting point since we don’t want to lose the chance to connect with photographers like you.
