Behind the creative for CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6

As you may have heard, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6 launched on March 20-hooray!!! At Corel, we’ve been pumped for this release for quite a while and I’m excited to finally be able to discuss being the lead designer on it! Has anyone tried it yet? What did you think?

We kicked off the launch with a staff party and a visit from Joe Diaz, grand prize winner of the 2011 CorelDRAW International Design Contest. Joe’s artwork has inspired many of the visual campaign pieces and our creative team couldn’t wait to ask him all about how he uses CorelDRAW and what kind of exciting projects he’s up to.

Don’t you just love his design style?

If you’ve been following my blog posts, you probably know how passionate I am about CorelDRAW and the artwork our users create with it. My goal was to personalize the CorelDRAW experience by highlighting users and their artwork to provide a compelling intersection between the brand and our customers. This was accomplished by featuring users and their remarkable artwork throughout the marketing campaign, designing a sophisticated, powerful-looking package, and refreshing the multi-color balloon icon to have a dynamic, modern identity.

By showcasing our users, the campaign became about sharing their stories and the various ways they use CorelDRAW. From independent sign makers to fashion industry professionals, people use CorelDRAW as their personal tool to bring their vision to life. It was this understanding that brought about our new tagline “Show your true design style”. By using artwork from the 2011 CorelDRAW International Design Contest, we were able to demonstrate how international and diverse the product is. This Facebook banner is one of the many creative pieces which showcases artwork from one of the finalists:

The other creative objective was to ensure a bold, modern, sophisticated look that represents the confidence and power of the program. The sleek background texture of the packaging creates the sophistication, while the organic splash shapes at the bottom of the box and throughout the marketing pieces are bold, creative and dynamic. The balloon was also in need of a refresh, and while it remains true to the original color scheme and shape, it now has a more modern look that can be used on many platforms.
