The #IUSA14 show is run by the Professional Photographers of America Association or PPA. The PPA is the world’s largest non-profit photography association focused on solutions for the professional photographer. PPA is an organization that offers education, degrees, and certification as proof of excellence in the industry. This helps the independent photographer to market themselves, justify pricing and symbolize commitment and expertise to their craft. Attendees come to the pre-con and expo to learn new techniques, obtain PPA certification, receive awards and socialize with other photographers from around the world.
I was absolutely thrilled to be able to feature four extremely talented Painter Masters in our expo booth and Imaging USA also featured Heather Chinn in a show education session – Everybody Paints! Beginner Portrait Painting in Corel Painter X3. Heather Chinn, Jane Conner-Ziser, Fay Sirkis and Helen Yancy were the perfect presenters for portrait painting. They all specialize in photo-to-art transformations and also educate others on how to master digital art concepts.
From open to close of the show, every day a Master was presenting various techniques for creating painted portraits and offering them as an additional sellable option to clients. The enthusiasm for this technique was infectious and the photographers were able to envision themselves as photo artists by replicating what they learned from the Masters. Using Painter to create these works of art ensures that your work will stand out. It is so much more than any filter can produce and each work of art is truly a one-of-a-kind piece that looks just like traditional media. You can paint any type of portrait; people, pets, landscapes, still life – the possibilities are endless.
Not only can a photographer produce an extra revenue stream for themselves with photo painting but they can also strive to be awarded a Master Artist Degree by the PPA. The M.Artist degree is “awarded for superior photographic skills — demonstrated through the PPA International Photographic Competition, advanced education and service to the industry.” I would highly encourage photographers to check out the three different degrees that PPA offers. A PPA degree can be one more tool for telling the world—and all those potential clients—why they should call you, rather than the competitor down the street. Our very own Heather Chinn and Helen Yancy have been awarded the M.Artist degree!
Joining the PPA is a very smart first step for any professional photographer. An added benefit of being a member is PPAedu. This online education program offers all kinds of training on demand. Helen Yancy created an education series just for the next version of Corel Painter which will launch in the near future and Jane Conner-Ziser Demystifies Corel Painter in a recorded session.
